ABA CEO steps down

(21 October 2016 – Australia) National Australia Bank chief and chairman of the Australian Bankers’ Association, Andrew Thorbun has announced that the association’s chief executive Steve Münchenberg is stepping down from his role after six and a half years.

While making the announcement, Thoburn added that Münchenberg had previously said "seven years was the right tenure for the role".

Münchenberg will continue to serve as the chief executive until a replacement has been found.

Speaking of Münchenberg’s tenure, Thorburn said he: "helped the banking industry navigate through a rapidly changing political and regulatory environment in the wake of the global financial crisis and more recently as the industry has strived to better explain the role banks play for customers, the community and the Australian economy."

Münchenberg said: "I have appreciated their willingness to work with us to produce good outcomes for Australian consumers and our community, and to safeguard our strong, resilient banking system which has helped to drive economic growth and jobs for Australian workers.”
