NAB plans hiring spree to beef up business bank offering

(25 September 2019 – Australia) NAB has announced plans to hire 163 new business bankers as it looks to increase its market share among small and medium enterprises.

Anthony Healy, NABs chief customer officer and the man in charge of NABs most important division, said in an interview, “In the business bank, this is the biggest investment in bankers we’ve made in a decade. So that is an acceleration of our growth.”

The bank plans to use the new bankers to target key industries where it sees strong long-term prospects, including healthcare, agribusiness, professional services, education and private banking.

NAB's hiring spree comes after a group of financial regulators on Monday said they would "closely monitor" the "tight" credit conditions for small businesses.

Mr Healy said NAB’s small business lending had been growing strongly, but described credit access across the wider small business segment as a "mixed bag." He said there was a need to avoid "unintended consequences" for business lending from consumer-protection laws.
