Simoes moves up the ranks to HSBC Bank and Europe CEO

(10 August 2015 – Europe) HSBC Holdings plc has appointed Antonio Simoes as chief executive of HSBC Bank plc and chief executive of Europe.

Simoes takes the job on 1 September and will also join the group executive board, in a major step up for the banker from United Kingdom chief executive.

Simoes joined HSBC in 2007 from McKinsey & Co.

He led HSBC’s Group Strategy and mergers and acquisitions (M&A) activities, and in 2009 assumed responsibilities for Planning and chief of staff to the Group chief executive.

He was appointed head of Retail Banking and Wealth Management for Europe in January 2012.

In November 2012, he was appointed chief executive of the UK Bank and deputy chief executive, HSBC Bank plc.

Simoes succeeds Alan Keir, who will step down as chief executive of HSBC Bank Plc effective 30 September, and will retire from the Group effective 31 March 2016, after a distinguished 34-year career at HSBC.

Keir joined HSBC in 1981 and has worked in a variety of roles before being appointed to his current position in October 2013.
