ANZ focuses on growth states

(14 May 2008 – Australia) ANZ has announced the appointments of a state chairman to each of Australia’s two fastest growing states, Western Australia and Queensland. The Australian focus is in addition to the bank’s clear Asia focus, with both targeting areas of rapid economic expansion to fuel the bank’s growth ambitions.

ANZ has said that the specific intention of the appointments is to assist in the further development of ANZ’s business in these fast growing states.

The bank has appointed Russell Shields as Queensland Chairman and John Atkins as Western Australian Chairman.

ANZ chief executive officer, Mike Smith, said that both Shields and Atkins will be responsible for representing ANZ’s interests and strengthening the bank’s profile in Queensland and Western Australia.

They will work closely with the state heads of ANZ businesses and have accountability for the development of our activities in Australia’s two fastest growing states, Smith said.

Shields’ has prior Queensland experience, having established the Queensland office of Wardley Australia, the investment banking arm of HSBC.

Atkins is currently head of office with law firm, Freehills, in Perth and is also serving as Deputy Chairman of the Committee for Perth and as a Board Member of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Western Australia.
