Commonwealth Bank head beats up IT
(Australia) - The Head of Australia's Commonwealth Bank, David Murray has hit the IT industry accusing it of over promising and under delivering on promises.
The Bank, the first large Australian corporate to outsource its complete IT function in a deal with EDS five years ago, has seen technology being deployed according to promise, according to Murray.
"The IT industry in the US has single-handedly destroyed the world economy, leaving governments to clean up the mess," he has claimed, noting further that "the apparent creation of a paperless office had only created new classes of lengthy legal documents." "Email had created new legal obligations and that if everybody at CBA sent him an email he would have 34,000 to sift through everyday."
"It's difficult to trial the costs and get a sense of the productivity gains," although the Bank's telecommunications outsourcing deal with Telecom New Zealand was "fine", with the Bank achieving savings of 30 percent.
