Global M&A Volumes Slide 20 Percent in Q1 2022 - Refinitiv

(25 April 2022 – Global) Global mergers and acquisitions (M&A) volumes totalled US$989.5 billion in Q1 2022, representing a slide of 20 percent year-on-year according to the latest Refinitiv data.

This is the first quarter of sub US$1 trillion global M&A volumes since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in Q2 2020. Promisingly the number of “big ticket” deals with a value greater than US$10 billion jumped 38 percent YOY, relegating smaller ticket deals of US$1 billion to US$5 billion to contract by 40 percent. The number of deals overall has decreased 19 percent since Q1 2021.

Goldman Sachs held its standing as the top global M&A financial advisor for Q1 2022, holding a 35 percent market share up strongly from 29 percent in Q1 2021. An estimated US$26 billion worth of fees have been generated by investment banks globally so far in 2022, down by 32 percent YOY but broadly in line with average over the last four years. M&A fees are up 12 percent for the year to date to US$9.2 billion, marking the highest level over this period since Refinitiv’s records began in 2000.

“Despite a few very large deals slipping through, the first quarter of 2022 will be remembered for how hard the corporate M&A market hit the brakes, how the SPAC market nose-dived, and how, amid the slow-motion backdrop, financial-sponsored M&A took the bend at full-throttle” said Refinitiv Director Deals Intelligence, Matthew Toole.
