(Indonesia) – An Indonesian court has sentenced the country’s Central Bank governor to 3 years in jail for graft over a banking scandal.Sjahril Sabirin, who was not taken into custody, is appealing the conviction, while the Bank’s senior deputy governor said his boss would stay in the post until such appeal processes were exhausted.
Surprise has been expressed by markets at the conviction, with expectations of a Sabirin acquittal, given separate, earlier graft charges against two defendants in a scandal surrounding Bank Bali having had had their graft charges quashed.
