BNP Paribas Turns to Generative AI to Accelerate ESG Assessments

(12 November 2025 – France) BNP Paribas has introduced a generative AI solution to significantly cut the time relationship managers spend completing ESG assessment reports.

These assessments, used to evaluate clients’ environmental, social and governance risks, can involve up to 80 questions across areas such as governance, ethics, climate impact, biodiversity and human rights. Traditionally, completing them can take several hours.

To streamline the process, the bank built an internal model using ChatGPT and Microsoft Azure. The system scans and indexes client documents, proposes draft answers, and provides linked citations directing users to the relevant sections of the original files.

According to Enam Ehe, head of ESG data and systems: “The AI Assistant has been used by 600 users since the go live, helping them to complete almost 1600 ESG Assessments. The AI Assistant is used to complete around 35% of all ESG Assessments, and this rate is increasing gradually. We track the AI relevancy through quantitative and qualitative monitoring. And we also monitor the cost of running the LLM model in Azure, which is very limited in this use case. Overall, user adoption is good for this tool and user feedbacks are mainly positive.”

The bank says the tool is already speeding up workloads and improving consistency across ESG reporting.
