(2 December 2025 – Europe) Visa has announced a wave of new digital wallet launches and a forthcoming pilot in early 2026, capitalising on regulatory changes and rising consumer adoption.
The rollout follows updates to the EU’s Digital Markets Act, which for the first time allow third-party digital wallets to access NFC technology — a shift Visa says will open the door to greater innovation and competition.
Consumer, and as a result merchant, appetite is also strengthening.
Visa’s recent initiatives include:
-
A BBVA Pay wallet in Spain integrating Visa Token Service.
-
A tap-to-pay feature with Klarna for iOS and Android.
-
A co-branded Visa wallet with Vipps Mobile Pay across the Nordics.
-
A 2026 pilot enabling Italy’s domestic Bancomat scheme to be used abroad.
Visa Europe described the launches as “a major step in giving Europe more choice, more competition and more innovation in mobile wallets.”
