Instant Cross Border Payments Within Reach

(3 August 2026 – Australia) ANZ is building a new tokenised deposit offering to enable instant cross border payments for corporates as NAB partners Lloyds as part of the Swift Payments Scheme for seamless payments.

The moves are the latest steps by Australian lenders towards adopting new forms of digital money emerging across the globe.

ANZ is the only Australian bank among 17 major international players ready to issue a new digital form of bank deposit on its network according to Swift. The new “tokenised deposit” service is a secure messaging platform banks use to communicate about cross-border transactions allowing ANZ and other banks in the network to transfer funds between corporate accounts used to fund subsidiaries or pay suppliers.

“The biggest complaint from corporate treasurers is the ‘disappearance’ of their money over a weekend. This creates just-in-time funding, which allows the customer to have a 24/7 liquidity experience, while the banks manage settlement between themselves. Once that becomes mainstream, these treasuries, if they choose, can conquer the time zone problem of a global business” commented ANZ Banking Services Portfolio Lead, Nigel Dobson.

“The problem this solves is 24/7 liquidity for treasury management” Dobson added.

NAB partnered Lloyds Banking Group as a demonstration of how NAB’s gateway intermediary capability helps connect international financial institutions with Australian payment infrastructure for receiving payments.

For banks, this means improved access to Australian payment capabilities through a trusted partner. For customers, it means moving closer to a future where international payments arrive with greater certainty, transparency and faster delivery of funds.

In 2026, corporates are raising the bar on what they expect from their banking partners.

Cross border payments and real-time liquidity visibility are no longer “nice to have”, they’re mission-critical to managing working capital and risk.

In this video, East & Partners unpacks what corporates across APAC, the UK and the US are telling us about friction, predictability and transparency, and why banks that help clients see and move their money faster are winning disproportionate wallet share.
