(13 April 2022 – United States) Mastercard has filed 15 nonfungible token (NFT) and metaverse trademark applications with the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
The filings include NFT backed multimedia, marketplaces for digital goods, and payment transaction processing and e-commerce software business transactions in the metaverse.
“Cryptocurrencies are many things to people—an investment, a disruptive technology, or a unique financial tool. As interest and attention surges from all quarters, their real-world applications are now emerging beyond the speculative,” said Mastercard executive vice president for digital and emerging partnerships and new payment flows for Asia Pacific Rama Sridhar.
Payments giants like Visa and American Express have also filed several applications related to payment cards and services in the metaverse and using its cards at NFT marketplaces.
Other blue chip brands setting up shop in the metaverse include JP Morgan, HSBC, CaxiaBank's imagin, Siam Commercial bank and Walmart.
