(18 May 2020 – Europe) Santander have announced the appointment of Antonio Simoes as its regional head of Europe, one of its biggest regional banking operations. Prior to Simoes arrival at Santander, he previously worked as the head of global private baking at HSBC.
The focus for Santander in the near future is to expand its banking network into emerging economies. At the same time the bank will cut the costs to counter the low marginal return from historically low interest rates in developed European markets.
“Antonio will join the bank on Sept. 1, subject to regulatory approval, and will have managerial responsibility and oversight of the bank’s businesses in Europe with reporting lines from the country heads of Spain, Britain, Portugal and Poland” Santander commented in a statement.
