ASX chief to retire

(29th September 2010 – Australia) The chief executive of the Australian Securities Exchange, Robert Elstone, has revealed his intentions to retire from the operator in July next year. The chairman of the markets operator, David Gonski, announced that the board will conduct an executive search to find a successor for Mr Elstone.

Mr Gonski also highlighted that the search process would include candidates from both within the ASX and external candidates.

Mr Elstone became the chief executive of the ASX after the market operator merged with the Sydney Futures Exchange, of which Mr Elstone was the head, four years ago.

The announcement of Mr Elstone’s retirement comes at an important time for the ASX, as new entrants threaten the ASX’s market dominance.

Mr Elstone has served the ASX extremely well and I believe he can be very proud of, and we very thankful for, all of his achievements over a number of years, Mr Gonski told shareholders at the company’s annual meeting.
