Fraudsters go vishing

(23 January 2008 – USA) The FBI has warned of an increase in the level of fraud using Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology to con bank customers into handing over private information.Known as ‘vishing’, the FBI said such attacks had reached alarming proportions.

Vishing involves SMS text messages, phone calls and emails notifying bank customers that there are issues with their accounts in order to cajole them into submitting their details.

Customer responses can be routed through a VoIP answering system which asks them for their card numbers and other details.
