ANZ trialling chip technology with government

(31 July 2007 – Australia) ANZ has signed a deal with the Australian Government Department of Industry, Tourism and Resources (DITR) to trial secure online access technology with bank customers. The pilot will see ANZ customers accessing federal, state and local government online services using a chip card with a digital certificate.

ANZ managing director of Working Capital, Chris Cooper, said ANZ was the first Australian bank to reach such a deal with the Commonwealth.

He said ANZ had been issuing clients with chip cards since 2003 to use the bank’s online services and the agreement with DITR would be an extension of that.

ANZ said businesses could use the chip card for applying for grants and concessions and meeting customs reporting requirements for importers and exporters.
