ANZ throws down green gauntlet

(2 May 2007 – Australia) ANZ has committed to becoming carbon neutral by 2009 in Australia and New Zealand through purchasing enough renewable energy to offset its greenhouse gas emissions. The bank has also announced its new head office in Melbourne’s Docklands will be state of the art in terms of green building design, aiming for 6-star Green Star status, which would mean the building was a world leader in this regard.

The new office will house 5,500 ANZ staff, opening in 2010.

ANZ chief executive John McFarlane said the bank was committed to playing its part in tackling climate change.

“Although we know there will still be much to do in reducing ANZ’s environmental footprint, creating a sustainable building which will stand on the world stage is an important step for ANZ, our people and for Melbourne,” he said.
