Executive Changes

(29 November 2018 – Spain) Onur Genç, country manager for BBVA US has been appointed as the Spanish lenders’ new chief executive as part of a major leadership shake-up in Spanish banking.

The appointment of Mr Genç is the latest appointment in a busy few months for leaders of Spanish banks. In September BBVA announced that current chief executive Carlos Torres Vila would replace Francisco González as executive chairman who has lend the bank for the last 18 years.

Banco Santander announced the same day that Andrea Orcel, head of UBS’ investment bank, would take over from José Antonio Alvarez as its chief executive.

Mr Genç came to BBVA through Turkish lender Garanti, which BBVA has a 50 percent stake in. Since the start of last year Mr Genç has been the chief executive of BBVA Compass and country manager in the US for the Spanish Bank.

Mr Genç will take over his new role at the end of December.
