(18 January 2022 – United Kingdom) Amazon has reversed its decision to ban Visa credit cards in the United Kingdom (UK).
The original decision to ban Visa credit cards on Amazon.co.uk was driven by a dispute over card issuer payment fees in November 2021. The European Union (EU) places limits on fees such as these however when Brexit took Britain out of the EU it gave issuers carte blanche to raise charges. Visa raised its interchange fees from 0.3 percent to 1.5 percent which was met with instant derision by Amazon.
“Amazon is working closely on a potential solution that will enable customers to continue using their Visa credit cards on Amazon.co.uk. Should we make any changes related to Visa credit cards, we will give customers advance notice. Amazon customers can continue to use Visa cards on Amazon.co.uk after 19 January while we work closely together to reach an agreement” the group said in a statement.
