(10 June 2025 – Australia) Australian Payments Plus (AP+) has partnered with Giesecke+Devrient (G+D) to deliver a global first: eftpos Click to Pay with integrated least-cost routing (LCR) for online debit transactions.
The Click to Pay service enables consumers to make fast, secure online purchases without manually entering card details, using tokenised credentials instead. By integrating eftpos and LCR, merchants can automatically route transactions through the lowest-cost payment network, offering a compelling alternative to traditional card schemes.
According to an April 2024 Reserve Bank of Australia report, merchants with LCR enabled save nearly 20 percent on debit card transaction costs compared to those without.
While LCR is widely implemented for in-store (70 percent) and mobile wallet (30 percent) payments, this marks the first time the capability is extended to online guest checkouts.
Adrian Lovney, Chief Payments and Schemes Officer at AP+, said: “Click to Pay with eftpos combines the seamless, secure online checkout experience customers expect with the added benefit of least-cost routing — helping put downward pressure on the cost of accepting payments.”
AP+ is also collaborating with Google to support eftpos and LCR for Google Wallet payments, with ANZ and Suncorp the first issuers onboard. A broader rollout is planned for 2026.
