Austrade to outline North East Asia opportunities

(28 August 2007 – Australia) Austrade is running a seminar for New South Wales businesses on 12 September to outline the export opportunities in North East Asia.Currently, more than a third of Australia’s merchandise exports go to Japan,
China, South Korea, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

However, Australia’s Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations with China and
Japan, and a potential FTA with South Korea means these are also attractive
markets for Australian businesses that have done their homework.

Some 4,000 Australian companies exported to China over the last twelve months.

Japan has been Australia’s biggest export market for nearly forty years. Hong
Kong is Australia’s twelfth largest export market, receiving total merchandise
exports worth US$3.15 billion in 2006 and services exports of US$1.6 billion.
Exports to neighbouring Macau were worth US$50 million in 2006.

Austrade’s seminar will be held at Trade & Investment Centre, Level 47, MLC
Centre, 19 Martin Place, Sydney on Wednesday 12 September 2007, from 9 am to 12
noon.
