(11 September 2025 – United States) Citi and US Bank cardholders will be the first to trial Mastercard’s new agentic payments technology, Agent Pay, ahead of a planned global rollout.
Unveiled in April, Agent Pay uses AI to enable “intelligent transactions”. Mastercard illustrated the concept with an AI agent that can help plan a birthday party — sourcing outfits, suggesting accessories, making purchases, and recommending the best payment method.
The service will be extended to all US cardholders by the holiday season, before launching worldwide. In parallel, Mastercard has released an Agent Toolkit to help developers integrate its APIs into AI assistants.
“AI-powered payments aren’t just a trend — they’re a transformation,” said Craig Vosburg, chief services officer, Mastercard. “Payments must be native to the agentic experience. We’re building the infrastructure for a new generation of intelligent transactions, where consumers and developers can empower AI agents to act on their behalf with trust, transparency and precision.”
