(13 October 2020 – United States) The United States (US) treasury department’s Office of Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) have fined Citibank US$400 million after discovering substantial deficiencies in the institution’s risk management, compliance, data governance and internal controls.

The OCC will now require Citibank to go through an approval process before making significant new acquisitions. They have also warned the bank of additional business restrictions if sufficient progress isn’t made in the short run.

“Regulatory compliance has become more and more vigorous leaving banks with the hard-work of keeping up-to-date with these dynamic changes. For banks to avoid ongoing violations it’s important that they utilise technology in the best ways possible” commented East & Partners Europe Market Analyst, Pierre Sokoya.
