Commbank glitch creates cash giveaway

(1 March 2011 – Australia) The technology team at the Commonwealth Bank of Australia is in overdrive today, trying to fix a system glitch which has seen the bank’s ATMs dispensing cash to customers without funds in their accounts. The New South Wales Police reported this afternoon that around 40 ATMs operated by a “major bank” were dispensing large amounts of excess cash.

A spokesperson for CBA confirmed that their ATMs had been affected and ATMs were “not accidentally or randomly dispensing cash, but are currently operating and have been operating in standby mode.

“That means the ATM can’t identify the customers’ account balance,” the spokesperson added.

‘Some have deliberately withdrawn more money than is in their account … and we will be recouping those funds.”

NSW Police state fraud chief Detective Superintendent Col Dyson today warned consumers who failed to return the money to the bank could face criminal charges.
