(20 February 2023 – Hong Kong) The government of Hong Kong has announced the successful sale of the world’s first tokenised green bonds worth roughly HK$800 million (US$102 million).
The Hong Kong Monetary Authority had been looking into tokenised green bond issuance since at least 2021. Green bonds are issued to finance eco-friendly projects and expected to lower the bond issuance and settlement costs and bring more transparency to the bond market.
“The successful issuance of this tokenised green bond marks an important milestone as it demonstrates Hong Kong’s strengths in combining bond market, green and sustainable finance as well as fintech,” said Hong Kong Financial Secretary, Paul Chan Mo-po.
