Indonesia intervenes to support rupiah after Bali bombings

(Indonesia) – Bank Indonesia, the country’s central bank, has confirmed it intervened to support the rupiah in the aftermath of the Bali bombings which killed at least 180 people.The central bank didn’t reveal the scale of the intervention, but traders in Jakarta said they believed Bank Indonesia had spent as much as US$20 million on the action. The Indonesian Bank Restructuring Agency is also believed to have been involved.

The dollar moved to an intraday high of 9350 rupiah on the Monday after the attacks before coming back to around 9225 rupiah after the intervention.

Bank Indonesia says it has “ample” foreign exchange reserves of US$30 billion and is continuing to monitor the situation.
