(16 November 2007 – Japan) MasterCard has teamed up with Japanese mobile phone company Softbank to launch what’s called ‘tap and go’ technology enabling consumers to pay for goods with their phone handsets.Orient Corporation, smart card vendor Gemalto, Samsung and Hitachi are also involved in the launch of the contactless Pay Pass technology platform, which will be trialled in the first quarter of next year.

Consumers will be able to use their phones to make low cost purchases both in Japan and overseas.

MasterCard said it recognised that global interoperability was vital to the success of any payment program because consumers wanted to be able to pay as easily when they were travelling overseas as when they were in their home country.
