New ATMs make thieves “ink” again

(25 May 2004 – Australia) Dayton, Ohio based technology company NCR has launched a wireless ATM into the Australian market that comes equipped with ink staining technology that renders cash worthless in the event of a robbery.NCR, which recently secured a contract with Moneybox Corp in the Netherlands to supply the ATMs at service stations and fast food restaurants, said the anti theft technology had reduced attacks on ATMs in Europe and the US.

The Cash4all ATMs contain the company’s Fluiditi technology and activate indelible ink during an attack, covering the notes and making them useless.

Being wireless and therefore portable, the ATMs can be installed in outdoor locations such as service stations, bus terminals and ferry stations.

According to NCR, external ATMs are typically more lucrative and drive greater volume of transactions than internal ones. However, margins are eroded by the cost of installing the machines and subsequent service and security.

NCR Australia business development manager Dean Talbot said the ATMs offered deployers the advantage of “outdoor placement while significantly reducing many of the associated costs and logistical issues”.
