(2 February 2010 – UK) Thousands of Egg credit card holders have been unable to make online repayments for the past six weeks due to out of date banking records. The Egg website has been unable to identify cards issued by NatWest or the Royal Bank of Scotland as legitimate, as out of date records fail recognise the customers new Bank Identification Numbers (BINs).
The two banks are currently in the process of moving 13 million current account customers from Maestro to Visa debit cards.
The glitch has occurred because Egg’s systems have not been updated to recognise the new numbers.
A spokeswomen for the bank said that it has a contract with Experian Payments to receive updates on new BIN numbers as the bank is not able to update manually.
The spokeswomen also added that as soon as the bank was made aware of this issue they began working with a third party that was able to provide the data to rectify this problem.
As the majority of Egg customers pay by direct debit this only affects a very small number of customers wishing to make a top-up payment, the spokeswomen added.
