(2 August 2023 – Global) Global sustainable bond issuance is set to surpass US$950 billion in 2023 despite the number of debut issuers declining according to Moody’s Investor Service.
Global issuance of green, social, sustainability and sustainability-linked (GSSS) bonds bounced back to US$254 billion in Q1 2023, up 36 percent from Q4 2022 and ten percent year-on-year (YOY).
Over US$526 billion in sustainable bond issuance was recorded for H1 2023, marking a seven percent increase YOY according to Moody’s. The ratings firm anticipates issuance to remain elevated in H2 2023, pushing sustainable debt volumes above the firm’s US$950 billion forecast for 2023.
“We expect volumes to continue on a similar trajectory in upcoming quarters and are maintaining our full-year 2023 sustainable bond issuance forecast of US$950 billion, comprised of US$550 billion of green bonds, US$150 billion of social bonds, US$175 billion of sustainability bonds and US$75 billion of sustainability-linked bonds” commented Moody’s Investors Service Sustainable Finance Vice President, Matthew Kuchtyak.
