Thai NPL’s up 7 percent as central bank changes calculation method

(Thailand) – Non-performing loans in Thailand’s banking sector have increased by 7.3 percent after the Bank of Thailand (BOT) revised the way in which it calculates the category.BOT Governor Pridiyathorn Devakula said the revision pushed NPL’s as at the end of June to 17.73 percent of total lending, against 10.19 percent previously. The new NPL amount is 843 billion baht, or around US$19 billion.

The new method of calculation was suggested to the BOT by ratings agency S&P to bring Thailand into line with international standards.
