(15 September 2025 – China) UnionPay International (UPI) has launched a pilot scheme linking QR payments between mainland China and Indonesia.
During the sandbox phase, selected users in China can pay with UnionPay and Alipay apps at over 40 million Indonesian merchants using the country’s QRIS system. At the same time, merchants in China’s UnionPay and Alipay networks are able to accept payments from 22 Indonesian mobile wallets.
Transactions are settled in local currencies, with the aim of simplifying cross-border payments for consumers and widening merchant reach.
The pilot, guided by the two countries’ central banks, is limited to whitelisted users and merchants but is expected to be fully rolled out by year-end.
