What is the Most Valuable Currency in FX?

(17 August 2026 – Australia) As Australian enterprises become increasingly connected to the global economy, advances in data, technology and customer insights are reshaping foreign exchange (FX) with a more relevant customer experience and greater confidence when transacting across borders the ultimate result.

Every FX transaction sits within a broader customer relationship. Viewed on its own, a currency conversion reveals very little. But when considered alongside a customer’s wider banking relationship, patterns begin to emerge. A customer may regularly make international payments, operate a business that trades across multiple markets or have personal banking needs that span borders.

As customer expectations evolve, success in FX is increasingly measured by more than the exchange rate alone. Customers want confidence that transactions can be completed efficiently and that they can participate in the global economy without unnecessary complexity.

Advances in data, analytics and digital technology are making it possible to apply the principles of relationship banking to foreign exchange at scale. Rather than relying solely on broad customer segments or generic assumptions, financial institutions can draw on deeper insights into customer behaviour and preferences to improve service design, pricing outcomes and digital experiences.

The objective is not complexity, it’s relevance. Better insights help deliver experiences that are more responsive to the increasingly global nature of customers’ personal and business lives.

“What’s the most important currency for customers participating in FX markets? I’d argue it’s probably not what you are thinking. Clients are telling us it’s confidence – confidence to make that large payment, confidence to manage their currency risk, confidence to invest, to travel, to trade. That confidence is built through relationships, reliability and relevance. Westpac works with customers to deliver that confidence in FX” commented Westpac Managing Director, Head of Business and Consumer Group Financial Markets, Haydn Calderwood for Westpac IQ.

“In an increasingly connected global economy, that confidence has become one of the most valuable services a financial institution can provide. It is built through trusted relationships, better customer understanding and experiences that remove complexity rather than add to it. Because FX is not simply about converting one currency into another. It’s about helping customers participate in the global economy with certainty and peace of mind. And that’s why, in FX, the most valuable currency is not data, technology or even an exchange rate. It’s customer confidence.”

Westpac has been named as the winner of the Best Spot FX Product for Businesses turning over A$100-725m by East & Partners Global. More than 2,500 active business FX users were directly interviewed for the Australian Business FX service with the result based on the voice of business customers across the country.
