ANZ Bank partners with Apple Pay

(28 April 2016 – Australia) ANZ Bank has become the first Australian based financial institution to jump on the Apple wagon, as it announced support the mobile payment service.

Apple Pay, which was introduced entered the local payments market late 2015, supported by only American Express, allows users to register their payment cards on compatible devices such as iPhones.

ANZ Bank’s CEO Shayne Elliott said in a statement that [Apple Pay] “is a significant milestone in our strategy to use digital technology to provide our customers with a superior experience and will be a watershed moment in the adoption of mobile payments in Australia.”

“With the high adoption rates of contactless payments in Australia, our customers will be world leaders in their ability to use their mobiles to make the vast bulk of essential payments,” Elliott said.

East & Partners Merchant Payments Report found that nearly 30 percent of all merchants in Australia rate contactless technology as a “priority” over the next two years, well behind Internet payment platforms (86 percent).
