The business banks are hiring

(3 July 2009 – Australia) The battle is on in small business banking to expand and grow market share, with a number of banks now focussed on hiring business banking staff. In early June, CBA announced that it was putting business bankers back into its branches to improve the level of service that it gives to SME customers.

CBA’s small starting project, to be expanded on success of the trial, includes the relocation of specialised teams of business bankers to select retail branches in New South Wales, South Australia and Western Australia.

CBA’s big four competitors are striving for further success in much the same way.

SME market leader, NAB, has indicated, in a presentation by business banking executive, Joseph Healy, that it intends to pursue an aggressive strategy to maintain its market share in business banking.

This will reportedly include hiring up to 200 new personnel and growing its presence in NSW, WA and Queensland. As well as the search for bankers and product specialists, NAB also plans to open 12 new business banking centres.

Not to be outdone, ANZ announced that it would expand its network of small business specialists by employing 130 additional small business bankers in branches and business centres around Australia.

The majority of small business specialists are to be located in branches in metropolitan and regional areas with others adding to the specialist services available in ANZ business centres and through ANZ’s small business hotline.

To round out the big four, Westpac’s retail and business banking unit is undergoing a project called ‘Westpac Local’, which involves the return of the bank manager, while also putting more employees on the front line.
