ANZ targets female staff with new maternity package

ANZ targets female staff with new maternity package

(16 December 2004 – Australia) ANZ has taken a big step in becoming more female friendly by introducing a generous parental leave package. The bank’s package includes a doubling of paid parental leave from six to 12 weeks and gives employees the choice of taking parental leave as a lump sum up front payment, or choosing leave allowance over 12 weeks or 24 weeks on half pay.

The bank said the benefits of the package will be available to all staff and that a qualifying service period is not required. It is available to the primary care giver whether female or male.

The bank will also introduce initiatives that will enable employees on parental leave to keep in touch with the workplace and to help them make the transition back to work.

ANZ head of People Capital Shane Freeman said the package was designed to help the bank attract and retain more female employees by assisting them to balance their work and home lives.

"The majority of our people who take parental leave are women and this initiative recognises there is a strong business imperative to more actively support and encourage talented women to return to ANZ after their leave," he said.

ANZ chief executive John McFarlane has long been an advocate of better conditions for women in the workplace and has been consistently named by Equal Opportunity for Women in the Workplace as one of the leading CEOs for the advancement of women.
