CBA establishes Indigenous Banking Team

CBA establishes Indigenous Banking Team

(3 November 2009 – Australia) The Commonwealth Bank has launched its 2009 Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) and announce the establishment of a dedicated Indigenous Banking Team. The focus of the Indigenous Banking Team will be to work directly with Indigenous leaders to define specific community objectives and implement tailored programs such as financial literacy, mentoring and business development support.

The team will also implement the group’s new Indigenous Employment Strategy, which will see the CBA commit to providing at least 350 positions to Indigenous Australians over the next three years, and has a key focus on employing and promoting Indigenous people throughout all areas of the group.

There will also be the development of the Indigenous Customer Assistance Line, which has been developed to provide a relevant banking service for remote Indigenous customers to assist them with their money management needs.

The bank also has goals to ensure CBA employees have an appreciation of Indigenous culture by implementing cultural awareness programs and online learning programs, and through its support of Bangarra Dance Theatre.

Ralph Norris, chief executive officer, CBA said the group’s new RAP has renewed, strong focus on supporting economically sustainable Indigenous communities and to meeting specific needs of the group’s Indigenous customers to help them achieve financial goals.

Mr Norris thinks that as one of Australia’s largest financial services organisations, CBA has an important role to play in building strong Indigenous communities and creating long-term opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders.
