Indian call centre workers flogging customer details

(30 June 2005 – India) Lurid British tabloid The Sun has published a report claiming that some call centre workers in India are selling the details of British account holders. The report caused City of London police to launch an investigation after the journalist provided them with a dossier naming a number of banks which may have had their customer data compromised.

The paper said its journalist had been offered customer account information as well as passports and credit cards for just over US$5000.

One call centre worker allegedly said he could sell up to 200,000 account details each month.

UK banks Barclays and National Westminster were named in the article as banks that may have been affected. Neither of the banks have commented on the report.
