UnionPay inks deals with Woolworths, Qantas

(4 May 2017 – China) Chinese payment giant, UnionPay has announced that it has signed partnership deals with two major Australian firms.

Supermarket chain, Woolworths, has enabled all of its outlets to accept UnionPay mobile QuickPass, while UnionPay International also collaborated with Qantas in accepting UnionPay cards to pay online for its flights departing from mainland China.

The agreement between UnionPay and Woolworths will extend to Woolworths Supermarkets, Dan Murphy's and BWS liquor stores and BigW discount department stores accepting mobile QuickPass in the near future.

UnionPay, together with over 20 banks, launched mobile QuickPass in 2015. The firm says that now the platform is accepted at over 10 million (point of sale) POS terminals worldwide, covering Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Macau, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, Taiwan and the UAE.

According to UnionPay, its acceptance network covers both online and in-store scenarios. The Chinese firm says 90 percent of ATMs and 70 percent of merchants in Australia accept UnionPay cards.

UnionPay adds that outside of mainland China, Australia has the largest number of mobile QuickPass terminals. Sixty percent of the local merchants accepting UnionPay cards support mobile QuickPass.
