CBA’s Bulford given key job
(6 February 2004 – Australia) Commonwealth Bank has appointed John Bulford as executive general manager of Advisory and Structured Finance, a division of the bank’s Institutional and Business Services (IBS).
Bulford has been a key player in arranging more than $5000 million of transactions over the past 12 months, including CBA’s recent participation in underwriting – along with ABN Amro – a $550 million bank facility to fund Foxtel’s new digital services roll out.
Bulford has been part of CBA’s institutional banking team for seven years, his most recent role being head of Structured Finance. He joined the bank from BZW Australia where he headed up the Structured Products division. His speciality is multi-jurisdictional tax based finance.
Bulford said the role of domestic institutional banks had changed significantly over the past few years.
"Four or five years ago, the international players were certainly the market leaders in Australia. However, some domestic institutions are now able to compete on a level playing field, primarily due to their knowledge of the domestic market, ability to drive innovation, and their sector expertise," he said.
He said CBA was looking to grow its presence in the market, "both in Australia and offshore".
Bulford will report to IBS group executive Michael Ullmer.
