Citi loss is ANZ’s gain

(25 March 2010 – Asia) Mark Robinson, Citigroup’s chief executive officer for South Asia, has resigned to join ANZ, after less than 18 months in the top position. Mr Robinson is rumoured to be replaced by Pramit Jhaveri, who is currently vice-chairman of Asia investment banking as well as head of global banking at Citi India.

Mr Robinson will become chief executive officer of South and South East Asia for Australia & New Zealand Banking Group Ltd., the Economic Times said reported, citing a person it didn’t name.

Australia and New Zealand Banking Group has been on the scout to fill the position of CEO for South and Southeast Asia for over a year, said a source with knowledge of the development.

Mr Robinson's new role will see him head ANZ's franchise in Singapore, Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia and potentially Malaysia and India.

Mr Robinson was appointed to head Citi South Asia, comprising of Citi in India, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka, in November 2008 when Sanjay Nayar quit.

Mr Nayar was a Citi veteran who had headed the region since 2002. His departure for private equity firm Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co was widely perceived as a large loss for Citi.
