100,000 cards recalled

100,000 cards recalled

(23 November 2009 – Europe) Visa and MasterCard have advised two of Germany’s banks to withdraw a further 60,000 cards out of circulation, in relation to a police investigation, bringing the total number of recalls to around 100,000. The recall comes after an investigation into a payment processing company in Spain was launched and affects people that have used Visa or MasterCard in the country.

Four weeks ago inconsistencies on customers’ monthly bank statements prompted Visa and MasterCard to warn banks about a potential problem.

Visa Europe released a statement saying that it is aware of a possible card data security issue in Spain.

Visa added that the issue does not appear to be specific to Visa and no other details have been confirmed.

In this circumstance, Visa has contacted a number of their member banks to make them aware of the situation and some may decide to take action as a precautionary measure, Visa highlighted in the statement.

Card fraud expert for Life Assistance Company CCP, Sarah Blaney, said that the group’s research suggests that Spain is the place that the British are most likely to have their cards lost or stolen.

The company urges all cardholders to be particularly vigilant when using their cards in Spain, Ms Blaney added.

According to the BBC, British cardholders will be contacted directly if they are thought to be at risk.
