Air-conditioner causes bank meltdown

(5 May 2011 – Australia) An air-conditioning system has caused havoc at Westpac’s data centre, leaving its systems in meltdown. Customers had complained when Westpac ATMs, EFTPOS and internet banking went off line, effecting pay, commuters and businesses.

A spokesperson for the bank confirmed that ATM and EFTPOS had been restored by midday Thursday.

'Westpac has now restored ATM and EFTPOS facilities following an earlier outage triggered by an air-conditioning fault at a data centre. This fault has now been rectified,' a spokesman said.

Westpac Group Executive Retail and Business Banking spokesman Rob Coombe apologised for the inconvenience to its customers.

'We take systems reliability extremely seriously and are very disappointed by the inconvenience to our customers and will undertake a thorough review," he said.

In the midst of the outage, customers were urged to make transactions in branches or through telephone banking while the system was being repaired.

'Certainly this problem we’re experiencing is affecting services nationwide so definitely some ATMs and EFTPOS facilities in Melbourne will be affected,' she said.

Ms Counsel said the bank's 'absolute priority' was getting functionality restored.
