ANZ invests $78 mil in data house

(19 April 2010 – New Zealand) ANZ New Zealand has invested NZ$78 million (A$75 million) on what it claims is the most advanced data centre in the country. The bank said that the new data centre supports more than 40 percent of New Zealand’s financial transactions, such as EFTPOS, ATM and online banking, for ANZ and The National Bank.

The 4000 square meter purpose built centre was officially opened by New Zealand’s Commerce Minister Simon Powell this week.

ANZ New Zealand’s chief executive officer, Jenny Fagg said the $78 million investment represents a real commitment to New Zealand and to the bank’s customers.

Having robust and stable technology systems underpinning ANZ’s operations is imperative to expanding the group’s growth and improving service, Ms Fagg added.

With the new, improved data centre ANZ is ensuring the security of its customers’ banking, finances and insurance information well into the future, Ms Fagg highlighted.

The facility complements the ANZ Group’s data centres in Melbourne and Asia, which is fundamental to ANZ’s super regional strategy and forms an integral part of all of ANZ New Zealand’s banking systems including retail banking systems (branch, EFTPOS, ATM and online banking), corporate and institutional banking and transactions, Ms Fagg commented.

The bank said the operating philosophy of the centre follows the principle of ‘no single point of failure’. This means that all of the IT processes are duplicated so that if one system, such as a data network or the power shuts down, the back-up system takes over seamlessly.
