ANZ loses top economic mind

(29 July 2009 – Australia) Saul Eslake, ANZ chief economist and widely regarded as one of the best economic minds in Australia, has announced that he will be leaving the bank. The bank’s chief executive officer, Mike Smith, described Eslake as one of Australia’s best known and most respected economists in Australia. Eslake has gained an international reputation after 14 years as chief economist at ANZ, Smith said.

As one of the country's more high profile economists, Eslake often provides commentary to the media, governments and the private sector.

Eslake intends to continue to be engaged in public dialogue about national and international economic issues, although there was no indication of what new direction Eslake will take.

ANZ announced the appointment of Warren Hogan as Acting Chief Economist following the decision by Saul Eslake to leave ANZ.

Hogan is currently ANZ’s Head of Australian Economics and Interest Rate Research and will act in the role until a permanent replacement for Eslake is identified.

Hogan has been with ANZ since 2005 having joined from Credit Suisse First Boston where he was Chief Economist and Head of Interest Rate Product Research.

Previously Hogan has held roles as an economist with Westpac Banking Corporation and the NSW Treasury Corporation. He has an Honours Degree in Economics from Macquarie University.

Hogan will take up the role of Acting Chief Economist early in August 2009.
