ANZ may send jobs offshore
(17 December 2008 – Australia) After cutting 800 of its workforce in recent weeks, ANZ plans to cut hundreds more positions in the next year and send them to India.
The Age newspaper has reported that a presentation to ANZ senior managers revealed that the bank is looking to cut 620 jobs between next month and September 2009.
In total, 870 jobs are reported to be sent offshore, with the nominated 620 jobs required to meet an ANZ board target.
Consultants Intelenet said in the presentation that in order to meet the board target, they recommended offshore migration of 620 full-time equivalent positions by September 2009.
ANZ currently has a technology centre in Bangalore, India, which is most likely the location of any jobs that are set to be offshored.
In fact, an ANZ spokesman said that it is reasonable to expect the size of its Bangalore operation to grow by about 500 people in 2009, particularly given it had grown by a similar amount this year.
Growth in Bangalore will continue to be in technology and back-office operations roles. ANZ remains committed to maintaining their call centres in Australia and New Zealand, the spokesman said.
The potential job losses are a blow to the Australian job market that has already seen a number of big businesses scaling back due to the financial crisis.
