ANZ plans recruitment drive

ANZ plans recruitment drive

(23 October 2009 – Asia) ANZ Bank plans to increase its presence in Asia by hiring as many as 600 bankers and customer facing staff in the coming 12 months. The plans are in line with the bank’s aspirations to become a ‘super regional’ bank and the group is focusing on Asia as a major area of growth, including Greater China.

The group’s Asia head, Alex Thursby told the Dow Jones Newswire, that the bank currently employs around 8,500 people and will probably add another 500-600 organically on top of that this financial year.

The increase is not inclusive of the staff the bank will take on upon the completion of the agreement to buy the retail and commercial banking businesses of the Royal Bank of Scotland around the region.

ANZ has already added more than 1,500 employees in the region in the past 12 months.

The institution is also making plans to add staff across all of its operations and the bank will continue to boost its institutional banking and debt capital markets businesses in Hong Kong.

The bank currently has a fully owned service centre in Bangalore, and is finalising plans to establish a second service centre. ANZ is looking for a second site for the centre presently.

The bank thinks it is good governance to have two separate service centres from a risk point of view, Mr Thursby said.

As the institution continues to consolidate, particularly in Asia Pacific, ANZ wants more sites, Mr Thursby added.

The number of staff the new centre will ultimately employ will depend on the level of growth ANZ achieves in the region and the centre is unlikely to be in India, although China is one region the bank would consider, Mr Thursby concluded.
