ANZ signs up for touch technology

(12 February 2010 – Australia) ANZ has plans to utilise Microsoft’s multi-touch tabletop screen ‘Surface’ technology. However, is still working out how to best apply the technology to the real-life banking environment, reported Online Banking Review. Microsoft Surface combines hardware and software technology that allows multiple users to manipulate digital content on a 30 inch tabletop display using touch, gestures and object placement.

Peter Dalton, group general manager, innovation, ANZ, said that the bank is exploring a number of innovative technologies, including Microsoft Surface.

ANZ will be using the experience gained from Microsoft Surface to work out how the bank can utilise touch and surface-based technologies to make managing money simpler and more exciting, Mr Dalton added.

Microsoft previously deployed the technology in the US and Europe and is now introducing Surface commercially to Australia, with ANZ and Curtin University agreeing to deploy the technology.

Chris Seymour, chief architect on the project with Object Consulting, said that feedback from users had been positive.

Because Microsoft Surface does not have a mouse or keyboard users can just walk up to it and touch it; it can be used without any experience or training. So it also attracts people that wouldn’t normally use a computer, Mr Seymour added.
