ANZ to refund fees
(16 April 2010 – Australia) Australia and New Zealand Banking Group has said it will refund fees that its customers were charged after a computer glitch, earlier this week, forced ANZ’s customers to use ‘foreign’ ATMs.
The computer glitch, which lasted from 9am to 10.40am on Wednesday, resulted in around 2500 machines, or 83 percent of the network, becoming inoperative, The Australian reported.
As a result of the glitch customers were forced to use ‘foreign’ ATMs belonging to other banks.
Changes to the payments policy last year saw banks forced into displaying fees ,when a consumer used a machine that was not their banking provider, giving customers an opportunity to cancel the transaction and refuse the fee.
Initially, ANZ said it would not offer refunds, as customers were free to use other options such as branches or EFTPOS, however changed its tune after discovering the glitch in Melbourne, The Australian reported.
Given the widespread impact, ANZ will be refunding customers who were charged for using another bank's ATM because the bank’s ATMs were not available during the outage, a spokesman for ANZ said.
