ANZ to shift jobs to India

ANZ to shift jobs to India

(24 April 2008 – New Zealand) ANZ plans to move 500 ANZ National workers to its offshore centre in Bangalore, India. According to reports, ANZ National plans to move around five per cent of its back office workforce from New Zealand to Bangalore over the next eighteen months.

Branch staff and call centre workers are not thought to be affected by the plan, while those that are affected will be redeployed.

The bank workers' union, Finsec, however, wants the Reserve Bank to step in and prevent ANZ National from undertaking this move.

Finsec campaigns director Andrew Campbell said that the Reserve Bank should protect New Zealand jobs.

However, ANZ National chief executive Graham Hodges had a different take on the situation. He said that while the jobs were being moved to India, it did not necessarily mean that the staff would lose their jobs.

ANZ National employs 9600 people in New Zealand. In the past three years the bank has increased its workforce in New Zealand by 800.
