Apple Pay ties up Cuscal network

(8 November 2016 – Australia) Cuscal, a major payments provider to Australia’s credit unions and banks has signed a deal with Apple to bring Apple Pay to its customers.

The service will be available to nearly four million Australians that bank with 31 entities across the Cuscal network.

These include Credit Union Australia (CUA), Bank of Sydney, Horizon Credit Union, Police Bank, Teachers’ Mutual Bank, People’s Choice Credit Union and Woolworths Employees’ Credit Union.

To date, ANZ and American Express have been the only providers of Apple Pay services in Australia.

Meanwhile, other major Australian banks, including Westpac, National Australia Bank and Commonwealth Bank of Australia, have resisted joining the technology giant, instead seeking to unite fight its restriction to use Apple Pay’s near field communication technology. The matter is currently with the industry regulator, with a decision expected later this month.
